Venerdì 19 maggio si è tenuta a Wrocalw, in Polonia, l’Assemblea Generale della Federazione Umanista Europea a cui nei mesi scorsi l’Associazione Luca Coscioni aveva fatto domanda di adesione.
All’incontro erano presenti rappresentanti di associazioni provenienti da molti paesi europei tra cui Polonia, Slovacchia, Svizzera, Romania, Norvegia, Olanda, Islanda, Francia, Inghilterra, Belgio, Svezia, Italia, Scozia e Grecia; l’ALC era rappresentata da Giulia Simi, membro del Consigli o Generale.
La Federazione Umanista Europea si occupa di numerosi argomenti tra cui la libertà dalle imposizioni religiosi, la libertà della ricerca scientifica, le leggi blasfeme nei paesi europei e, più in generale, il principio dell’autodeterminazione della persona.
L’incontro ha eletto i nuovi dirigenti: Giulio Ercolessi succede alla presidenza al già senatore belga Pierre Galand. L’assemblea ha accettato all’unanimità la richiesta di affiliazione dell’Associazione e, nel dibattito, è stato elogiato il suo lavoro in Italia.
Sabato 20 si è tenuta invece un dibattito interamente dedicato alle forme di populismo nei vari paesi come per esempio Polonia e Ungheria.
Alcuni dei prossimi impegni della Federazione sono:

Un convegno in risposta all’iniziativa europea “One of Us” sulla questione della ricerca sulla cellule staminali embrionali a cui l’Associazione Luca Coscioni ha già aderito.

Un indice della laicità degli Stati europei – l’ALC da anni ne elabora uno sulla libertà della ricerca scientifica e l’autodeterminazione.

Promozione della laicità nei processi di integrazione degli immigrati.
L’Associazione Luca Coscioni ringrazia i soci della Federazione e guarda con fiducia a questo nuova opportunità transnazionale di poter portare avanti le sue battaglie a favore della libertà della ricerca scientifica, i diritti civili, ivi compresa la legalizzazione dell’eutanasia nei paesi europei.

The Luca Coscioni Association for the freedom of scientific research was founded on 20 September 2002 by Dr. Luca Coscioni, a victim of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and a member of the Radical Party, who was promoting a campaign for freedom of scientific research on embryonic stem cells.
In 2001 he was the leading candidates for electoral lists promoted by Radicals in Italy for parliamentary elections. In preparing for his candidacy, Dr. Coscioni received the support of 51 Nobel Prize Laureates.
In 2005, the Association launched a referendum campaign aimed at abrogating Law 40, which the previous year had imposed a ban on assisted medical procreation and embryonic stem cells research. Despite the overwhelming support of those who voted, the referendum did not pass at the required quorum of 50% plus voters was not reached due to a pro-abstention campaign promoted by the Catholic Church and some conservative political parties.
The Association also promotes the World Congress for Freedom of Scientific Research, an international platform of scientists, patients and citizens.
In 2006, the Association played a leading role in the legal and political battle in favour of euthanasia and the Living Will in Italy thanks to the personal involvement of Piergiorgio Welby, the President of the Association, who suffered from a progressive muscular dystrophy.
After having addressed an open letter on his right to die to the Italian President of the Republic, and struggled almost three months to get the go ahead and see his will respected, Mr. Welby died on 20 December 2006 after having received sedation and after having been disconnected from mechanical pulmonary ventilation thanks to an act of civil disobedienceorganized by the leadershp of the Association.
To better explain what the example of Luca Coscioni for freedom of scientific research is about, I would like to quote from José Saramago, one of those who had endorsed Dr. Coscioni in 2001, who once said: “For a long time we had been waiting for the dawn of a new day, we were worn out with waiting, when all of a sudden the courage of a man made dumb by a terrible disease gave us new strength. Thank you Luca.”
Let me finishs with another quote from Dr. Coscioni himself:
“I hope that sick people like me will pluck up courage, grow strong, and break through their domestic isolation to fight for their own existence and recognition, for freedom as only those who have been deprived of freedom can fight. Fight for freedom of science, freedom of research, freedom of conscience. Fight for that value of freedom that cannot be theorized, but can only be lived with dignitidignity”.
L’Associazione Luca Coscioni è una associazione no profit di promozione sociale. Tra le sue priorità vi sono l’affermazione delle libertà civili e i diritti umani, in particolare quello alla scienza, l’assistenza personale autogestita, l’abbattimento della barriere architettoniche, le scelte di fine vita, la legalizzazione dell’eutanasia, l’accesso ai cannabinoidi medici e il monitoraggio mondiale di leggi e politiche in materia di scienza e auto-determinazione.
